Securus Technologies is crushing it. This telecommunications giant is taking over its industry in a big way. You may have never heard of this company even though it is unstoppable. That’s because Securus Technologies only deals with prisons. They are a private third-party telecommunications company that exists solely within our criminal justice system.
This company is innovating so quickly that its competitors are making up rumors about them. One of the biggest rumors circulating is about their new video visitation technology. This technology allows anybody who wants to talk to a prisoner to have a virtual video chat. The video chat only costs a few dollars, the quality of the chat is high, and the video visitation technology is incredibly easy to use.
Securus’s competitors are all making up rumors about this particular technology. They claim that families of prisoners are forced to use this technology in lieu of physical visitation. This is just not true. Families are choosing virtual visitation over physical visitation for a variety of reasons, including costs, time management, and the pain of the physical visitation process.
Virtual visitation allows a family to avoid the embarrassment and intimidation of a physical visit. Prisons are known to charge for parking, families have to travel hours to get to their inmate, security checks can be demeaning, and the prison forces visitors to wait in a waiting room for a physical visit. It’s a process that costs money, takes time, and does not feel good.
Video visitation can take place anywhere an electronic device with Internet access can go. Families can take their inmates out on a picnic, bring them into the living room for a child’s birthday, or introduce him to a new family dog. None of these experiences are possible with physical visitation. This technology is revolutionizing the industry.
Securus Technologies has been providing solutions in various fields using technology. The Global Tel Links Company recently made some allegations against Securus Technologies. After this, Securus had a press release to make corrections and clarify the matter, which I think will help to clear its name.
First, the company filed a lawsuit against Securus Technologies for infringement on US patent number 7256816 and damages. According to Securus, the lawsuit would be moved to the District Court concerning the validity the patent. According to Securus, the patent was yet to be validated.
GTL also claimed that they had patent rights over video visitation monitoring. This helps in monitoring inmates and their visitors. On this Securus said that it does not use this security feature in any facility.
The third was that since PTAB agreed that one could have patent rights, they wanted to protect their technology on video visitation through the lawsuit. Securus, on the other hand, did not agree that PTAB had determined that this technology was patentable.
GTL then said that they would prove that Securus had been infringing on their patents. Securus was sure that nothing would be found against it because there was no evidence to prove the allegations.
In the next allegation, GTL said that Securus would have to pay their claims. Securus countered this by saying that this would only happen when it is granted in a court of law. Securus is sure that a look into their facilities would prove that they were innocent of these allegations.
Lastly, GTL said that Securus sued their competitors, forcing them to make settlements that were favorable to them. In addition, GTL said that Securus wanted to use this to make sure that they would not lose anything from the lawsuit. Securus said that they had settlements with the companies, which used their patents. They have licensed many companies to use their technology.
Natural catastrophes such as floods that have just been experienced in Louisiana greatly disrupt the day-to-day living of the people affected. The loss of property, loss of health or lives is just some of the aftermath that can characterize a flood. Besides, floods can separate or shut down communication between families at this crucial hour of crisis. Securus Technologies is cognizant of this fact and has offered free calls for inmates at the Louisiana Department of Public Safety Corrections (LA DOC).
Securus is the leading provider of criminal and civil justice technology solutions. The company provides services for public safety, investigation, and correction and monitoring. Currently, Securus serves more than 3400 institutions and covers over one million inmates across North America. Securus has excelled in the provision of emergency responses, public information, biometric analysis, investigations and inmate self-service.
A Friend in Need
Securus has proved to be a friend in need at this hour of crisis to the inmates at LA DOC in the wake of the recent flood. The company will allow the inmate a free call daily up to September 7th to enable them to stay in contact with their families who may be affected by the floods. The company’s management targets that the free calls will go a long way in reducing the anxiety and stress that the inmates and their loved ones are undergoing. This is a magnanimous gesture given that it will cost Securus about $ 300 000 to facilitate the service. As if not enough, Securus has contributed $ 50 000 to the welfare fund of the inmates at the Louisiana Department of Correction to cater for their welfare.
In going out of their way to cater for the communication needs of the inmates, Securus have proved that they hold their client in high regard. This is an example worth emulating for other companies, irrespective of their fields.
